Restart your engine everyday

The pool of qualified specialists gets bigger everyday. The competition among protection specialists is very overwhelming for each lone wolf out there waiting for the next call. Those of you who are in high demand are among the fortunate few but you should never think that you are that good that some new guy/girl can take your spot. If you are living in a market where EP is often used, you have an advantage over specialists that live in non-traditional EP cities or states. As I have mentioned before, the days of flying specialists across the country to staff a detail is long gone. If there is one thing that clients have evolved in is asking for local assets. Restart your engine and come to the realization that there are factors out of your control that work against you. Start making connections with companies closer to you to increase your probability. The chances of you flying on the clients dime from Idaho to NYC is lesser than driving from your house 200 miles to a detail. That’s the nature of the business now. Make closer connections.

Many of us are the go-to companies for larger security providers who don’t have a full specialist staff and then there are more out there that are beating the pavement to get a connection. The biggest problem among company owner is PRIDE. Most of us are all ALPHA [apologies to my Omega brothers] males and have an issue with asking for help. You can not learn this business effectively and be successful without help. Restarting your engine means shut down the old way of doing things and start a new perspective. The times have changed and so has the business. I have come to the realization that regardless of whether I agree with anyone or any company’s perspective or product, this is a business and if a customer, provider, client, or aspiring specialist invests in that company’s product, service or training all I can do is maintain my course and instill the importance of training, mindset and professionalism over anything else. In the end, that’s all that matters to me.

I also know that your location affects how you spend your cash to increase your net-worth. All I want to say to you is restart your engine and spend wisely. The reality is that the industry is changing from “where” you trained to “what” you were trained. Anything that says “advanced” should be a platform that builds upon a foundation. I agree with those training facilities that have baseline prerequisites before you can enroll in their advanced programs. I attended a High threat course in 2007 where the specialists had varying levels of EP, however you could really tell the difference as the course started moving at a faster pace. Basic concepts seemed to be foreign ideas to a couple of the students. As with any gathering of A-type personalities, the guys started gravitating towards others that “got-it” especially when the gun work started. I have said it before and I will say it again, any training facility that claims they teach you all that you will need to know about EP in one course is flat out lying. Just last week I received a resume from a local guy. On it I saw that he had attended BW’s executive protection course as well as RL Oatman‘s course here in Maryland. I called him and was curious as to why he attended both. He said that both courses were structured differently but he felt much better after the sum total of both courses together. Restart your engine and understand that you may walk away with great training, but you will not know all there is to know about EP in one course.

I still receive calls and emails from people in this business that ask pertinent questions regarding their position in this industry as well as help on doing things. These are the real professionals that have come to grips that something they are doing isn’t working or needs to be restarted. The question is, “Are you in this same stalemate?”

    Great article and very pertinent to all of us. Definitely, no one knows it all and if they say they do, those are the ones to avoid. I love learning new things and am constantly learning every day, no matter how many times I may have done a procedure or process, there’s always something new to learn or improve upon.
